Gibraltar Trade Center Not Reopening, Despite Social Media Claims Of New Locations
It turns out the rumors of Gibraltar Trade Center reopening anytime soon are false. This is according to information that I personally received from the family of the late owner of Gibraltar Trade Center.
Recently, there were rumors that a page that goes by the name of Gibraltar Trade Center 2 was trying to open a location in Taylor, Michigan, before being turned away by the city.
They alleged that they had secured a space within the Monroe Mall in Monroe and were merely waiting for the space to be vacated so that they could move in. They made promises of having over 300 vendors on site and even securing a couple of different Ferris wheels and a kid roller coaster for inside.
It all seemed too good to be true that one of our favorite places to hang out on the weekends in Michigan would be making a return. The fact is, though, whoever is running that Facebook page has had no contact with the family, according to the son of the late owner, Robert Koester, who emailed us the following message:
My name is Don Koester, the late Robert (Bob) Koester's son. I just saw your article and wanted to let you know that to my knowledge, the folks claiming to be opening "Gibraltar Trade Center 2" have not contacted me or anyone from the estate regarding the rights to Gibraltar Trade Center. Best Regards…
For me, that’s all I needed to know to determine whether or not that page was operating merely on satire. That’s not to say that whoever is running the page is not really thinking of opening an indoor flea market in the Monroe Mall.
Just that the rights to use the name have not been secured legally. So for now, my gut tells me the Facebook page is merely satire, until I can see some hard proof that it will open. Regardless, their claims of owning the name appeared to be false.
