Chaos And Scrutiny At The Canada-Michigan Border
The relationship between Canada and the United States has never been more strained than it is now as President Donald Trump and his administration continue to impose tariffs, taxes, and other policies that are affecting the interaction between the U.S and other countries. As our neighbors, Canada and Mexico have taken the most exception to the changes and this has created some bitter feelings.
Mexico hasn't been as vocal about their feelings toward the changes that are being made and if they have any rebuttals but Canada on the other hand, has been firing back since day 1. They threatened to cut off electricity to several states and have continued to speak out about their disapproval of the changes.
Now, the taxes and tariffs have been a situation of their own that hadn't affected more than our wallets, now they are starting to affect our everyday lives. As tensions continue to rise, interactions at the U.S and Canadian border are starting to become strained as well. Canada does seem to be a little more relaxed than America, but the issues persist.
Michigan could be largely affected by the happenings of the border as the United States continues to be strict at the borders. The Canadian government has warned its residents that they should expect scrutiny at the border and may even have their belongings searched, including passwords to electronics.
This could really affect the economy here in Michigan as there were 20.4 million visits from Canadian residents in 2024 and losing just 10% of those visits would mean over $2.1 Billion in lost revenue for the state. This is due in large part to the many people who live in Canada and choose to come to Detroit to work, dine, and shop.
Trouble and Extra Cautious Eyes At The Canada-Michigan Border
The Canadian Travel Advisory has told their citizens that they should comply and be forthcoming in all interactions with border authorities and if you are denied entry, you could be detained while awaiting deportation. Along with taking a burner phone and leaving their normal devices at home.
They have voiced that the Trump Administration has been very inconsistent with their policies and things could change at any moment. They also reminded their residents that if you do not meet entry or exit requirements for the United States the Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf.
There has been no discussion on whether Canada will be stricter at the border and how they will react to these moves. For the moment, they are choosing to focus on their citizens and how they can mitigate any escalations. Michigan should be prepared for changes at the border, in the economy, or both.
